Marine autopilot software updates

Plan an autopilot software update: check compatibility, save settings, secure power, follow the manufacturer’s process and verify steering afterwards.

Edited by Gabriel MachuretUpdated Editorial method

Treat an autopilot software update as a change to a steering system. Read the manufacturer’s instructions, record the existing setup and leave time to verify the result before departure. An update completed at the berth is not proof that every steering mode still works with the rest of the boat.

Record autopilot component models and software versions

Record model numbers and software versions for the pilot computer, controller, heading sensor and connected displays. Some updates are installed through another device, so the plotter’s version and network compatibility can matter. Use the manufacturer’s support information for the exact models.

Read what the release changes. A fix for a problem you have, a required compatibility update and an optional feature release have different priorities. If the instructions are unclear for a mixed-generation installation, ask support before starting.

Back up autopilot settings before updating software

Photograph the important setup pages and record selected data sources, hull type and drive configuration. Export settings where the equipment supports it. Keep the commissioning record and any installer notes with the backup.

Do not assume a backup from one version can be restored to another. Record human-readable values as well as any export file. A configuration record is useful even when the update normally preserves settings, because it gives you something concrete to compare afterwards.

Schedule software updates before a controlled sea trial

Carry out the update with the boat secured and steering use unnecessary. Allow time for a failed download, support call or follow-up visit. Starting immediately before an offshore departure leaves little room to diagnose unexpected behaviour.

Provide the stable power and storage media specified by the manufacturer. Follow the documented order for network components. Do not interrupt an update because progress appears slow unless the instructions or support team direct you to do so.

Verify autopilot steering after a software update

Confirm the installed versions and inspect configuration against your record. Check that heading, wind and position sources are present and correctly selected. Follow any required recalibration or commissioning steps stated in the release instructions.

Verify operation in a suitable controlled setting before relying on the pilot again. A responsive menu proves only that the display is running. Steering direction, takeover and the modes you actually use need the appropriate functional checks.

Record update failures and software versions for support

If behaviour changes, record the exact symptom, versions, messages and circumstances. Avoid repeated resets or undocumented setting changes that destroy the evidence. Ask support about the approved recovery process rather than assuming a downgrade is possible.

Add the update date and verification results to the boat’s equipment log. Keep the former versions in the history. That record helps a future technician distinguish a software change from a sensor, network or mechanical fault.

Questions

Frequently asked

Will an update erase calibration?

It depends on the product and release. Read the instructions and preserve settings before starting; verify them afterwards even if preservation is expected.

Can I roll back to the old version?

Do not assume so. Ask the manufacturer for the supported recovery options for your specific equipment.

Should every device be updated together?

Follow the compatibility and installation order for the system. Mixed versions may be supported or may require coordinated updates.

Is a sea trial always required?

Follow the release and commissioning instructions. Any change affecting steering or calibration needs appropriate verification before normal use.

Practise autopilot operation with an instructor

Habits are learned at the helm with someone watching. The training section explains what a good instructor covers and where to find one in your state.
