Queensland is where the Australian cruising season goes and where the trailer-boat fleet is biggest. From the Gold Coast Seaway to the Torres Strait is more than 2,000 kilometres of coast, most of it inside the Great Barrier Reef, with trade winds that blow 20–30 knots for months, tidal ranges that reach several metres in the north and a cyclone season that empties the anchorages from November to April.

The autopilot does more work here than anywhere. It steers days of downwind trade-wind sailing, threads reef passages on routes, cancels tidal streams that would set a boat onto coral, and runs plate-alloy fishing boats out to the shelf and back. It also operates in heat, humidity and lightning that punish electronics, and in waters where whales, reef and bars demand that somebody keeps looking.

Autopilot passage and installation planning in Queensland

Distinguish a Moreton Bay weekend, an island charter and a longer northern cruise when describing your needs. A single equipment shortlist should not conceal differences in boat familiarity, network condition and access to technical support along the itinerary.

What to ask at the handover

Include a check of remote controls, selected data sources and the crew’s familiarity with the actual installation. Save manuals offline before leaving reliable reception.

Queensland waters and the autopilot

Moreton Bay is shallow, channelled and busy, with sandbanks that a route drawn carelessly will find. The Gold Coast Seaway and the Broadwater are engineered and crowded. Wide Bay Bar guards the Great Sandy Strait and has claimed boats whose skippers trusted a route. Hervey Bay is flat and full of whales in winter. The Whitsundays offer strong trades, big tides and bareboats without pilots. Cairns and the far north add long reef passages, shipping lanes with pilotage, and the wet season.

Trade-wind sailing is the autopilot's finest hour and its biggest test: days on a broad reach with a following sea, where a wheel pilot slips and a below-deck drive with or settles the boat. Inside the Reef, and Track modes with waypoint confirmation on are how experienced crews cross the tidal streams between islands.

  • Trade winds: downwind stability settings, drive margin
  • Tidal streams north of Mackay: No Drift and Track modes
  • Bars: Seaway, Wide Bay, Noosa, Tweed; hand-steer every one
  • Reef passages: waypoint confirmation on, lookout on
  • Cyclone season and lightning: spares, disconnection at anchor
  • Whales June to November in Hervey Bay and the Whitsundays

The Queensland fleet

Catamarans are the signature of the state: Lightwave built on the Gold Coast, Seawinds from the Wollongong era and beyond, Lagoons and Fountaine Pajots in every marina. Most run Raymarine Evolution or B&G below-deck systems with a single drive on a . Monohull cruisers from the south arrive on EV-200s and NAC-3s. The Gold Coast builds Riviera and Maritimo cruisers with Garmin, Simrad and Raymarine hydraulic systems from the factory. The trailer-boat fleet, from Quintrex tinnies to plate-alloy sportsfishers, runs Garmin Reactor 40, Furuno NavPilot 300 and Simrad packs, and the estuary trolling fleet uses kicker pilots.

  • Cyclone season and tropical lightning

Autopilot instruction in Queensland

Sailing schools on Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast and in the Whitsundays teach within keelboat and Day Skipper courses, and the Whitsunday bareboat industry runs briefings that are useful even for private owners. Marine electronics installers in the Manly, Scarborough, Coomera, Mooloolaba, Airlie Beach and Cairns precincts offer handover sessions. Cruising rallies departing Bundaberg and Mooloolaba for the Pacific and the Whitsundays include preparation seminars where autopilot use, power budgets and watchkeeping are covered. Game-fishing clubs and dealers on the Gold Coast and in Cairns run on-water demonstrations for the fishing fleet.

Ask for instruction that covers bar-crossing procedure, reef-passage route discipline, tropical maintenance and a failure drill in a trade-wind sea. Costs are in line with the national indicative figures.

Questions

Queensland: frequently asked

What autopilot for a Whitsundays season?

A below-deck system with downwind stability settings and Track or No Drift for the tidal streams: Raymarine EV-200 or B&G NAC-3 on a cruising yacht or cat. Wheel pilots struggle in the trade-wind sea.

Can I cross Wide Bay Bar on autopilot?

No. Hand-steer, with local knowledge of the current waypoints from the volunteer marine rescue service, in daylight and on the right tide.

Does the heat damage autopilots?

Control heads in direct sun and connectors in humidity are the weak points. Shade the head, grease every connector and carry spares in the tropics.

Where do I get autopilot training in Brisbane or the Gold Coast?

Sailing schools on Moreton Bay and the Broadwater, installers in the Manly and Coomera precincts, and cruising-rally seminars. Ask for an on-water session on your own boat.

Sailing Queensland under autopilot?

Run the finder for your boat, then read the training section before you rely on the pilot for a passage. The lookout is yours in every state.
