Autopilot installation quote checklist
Compare autopilot installation quotes with a practical checklist covering drive sizing, wiring, steering work, commissioning, training and exclusions.
A useful autopilot quote describes a complete steering system and its handover, not just a boxed electronics pack. Ask each installer to quote against the same boat details and scope so you can see what is included, what is provisional and what will happen if access or steering work changes the price.
Key facts
- Bring
- Steering photographs and loaded displacement
- Compare
- Complete fitted scope, not pack prices
- Allow for
- Mechanical access and sea-trial time
- Ask for
- Written exclusions and acceptance criteria
Document boat, steering and displacement for the quote
Record the boat model, actual steering arrangement, loaded displacement, supply voltage and existing instruments. Photograph the quadrant or , steering ram labels, proposed mounting space and electrical panel. Tell the installer about your longest planned passage and whether the boat is sailed short-handed.
A boat length alone is not a sizing specification. Water, fuel, cruising stores and additions can change the working load. Where the loaded weight is uncertain, ask how the installer will establish it and which manufacturer limits govern the drive choice.
Separate hardware from structural work
Ask for named part numbers for the computer, sensor, controller, drive and any rudder feedback equipment. The quote should identify brackets, reinforcement, hoses, fittings, connectors and network adaptors. A drive cannot work properly on a flexible or poorly aligned mounting.
Access is often the expensive uncertainty. Ask whether joinery removal, opening inspection panels, lifting the boat or gaining access behind tanks is included. Agree how unexpected work will be documented and approved before it begins.
Specify autopilot power wiring and network work
Request a description of the power feed, protection, cable routing and network connection. The motor supply and data network have different jobs. An installer should check voltage at the equipment under load rather than assume that a healthy battery reading proves the wiring is adequate.
For a mixed-brand boat, list the exact displays and software versions. Ask which device supplies heading, wind, speed and navigation data. A connector that physically fits does not establish that all steering modes will be available.
Include commissioning and owner instruction
Set aside time for the manufacturer’s dockside checks and sea trial. Ask for a record of settings, limitations and the conditions in which the trial was completed. A successful turn beside the marina is not evidence of performance across your entire operating range.
The handover should cover standby, manual takeover, source selection, alarms and supported modes. Have another regular crew member attend. Agree in advance what happens if suitable weather is unavailable on the installation day.
Compare installation inclusions, exclusions and costs
Lay quotes side by side by work package: equipment, mounting, steering modifications, electrical work, network integration, commissioning and instruction. Check GST, travel, haul-out and disposal separately. A cheaper quote may simply leave more tasks with the owner.
Keep the final parts list, wiring diagram, settings and warranty contacts aboard and ashore. Ask who deals with a fault involving both the steering installation and the electronics; clear responsibility is more useful than a vague assurance that everything is covered.
Questions
Frequently asked
Can I compare quotes by autopilot pack price?
Only if the installation scope is identical. Drives, mounting work, cabling and commissioning can materially change the complete cost.
Should a sea trial be included?
Ask for commissioning and a documented sea trial appropriate to the system. If weather prevents completion, agree a return visit and do not treat the boat as fully commissioned.
What if I supply the equipment?
Confirm compatibility and responsibility before ordering. Ask who handles faulty parts, labour for removal and replacement, and any mismatch between the supplied pack and your steering.
Is training the same as commissioning?
No. Commissioning establishes correct setup; instruction teaches the crew how to operate and take over from it. Include both in the scope.
