New South Wales has the largest yacht fleet in the country, the longest continuous coastal cruising route, and the busiest shipping lane a recreational sailor is likely to cross. Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and Lake Macquarie are full of production cruisers and club racers; the Hunter, Port Stephens and the South Coast ports are the game-fishing and trailer-boat heartland; and the coast between them is a series of overnight passages that most owners make with the autopilot engaged for hours at a time.

The conditions are what shape autopilot choice here. The East Australian Current sets south at up to three knots offshore, southerly busters arrive with thirty knots and a steep sea in minutes, and the nor'east sea breeze builds a following sea on every summer passage north. Coastal ships, fishing fleets and, in winter, whales share the water. A pilot that holds a course downwind, cancels the current and hands the helm back instantly is not a luxury on this coast.

Autopilot passage and installation planning in New South Wales

Separate sheltered harbour use from the exposed legs between coastal ports. Write down where the crew will hand steer through traffic or entrances and how a forecast change would alter the destination. Do not infer offshore suitability from a quiet demonstration inside the harbour.

What to ask at the handover

Ask the installer to document performance under the conditions actually tested, then agree which coastal modes and alarms still need a supervised demonstration.

NSW waters and what they ask of an autopilot

Sydney Harbour and Pittwater are day-sailing and racing waters where a tiller pilot or wheel pilot earns its keep on the motor home and in the club fleet, and where the lookout matters more than the pilot because of ferries, charter boats and Saturday traffic. Broken Bay and the Hawkesbury add tide. Lake Macquarie is shallow, enclosed and gusty, with the Swansea bar and bridge at its entrance. Port Stephens, Jervis Bay and Twofold Bay are large natural harbours with game-fishing fleets running offshore daily.

The coast itself is the test. Passages from Sydney to Port Stephens, Coffs Harbour or Eden mean a night at sea, a current to cancel and a sea state that changes with every front. The pilot spends hours in Wind or mode, and the crew's watchkeeping and tether habits decide whether it is a pleasure or a risk.

  • East Australian Current: use No Drift or Track offshore
  • Southerly busters: reef early, raise response, expect a steep sea
  • Nor'east sea breeze: following seas on northbound summer passages
  • Shipping off Sydney, Newcastle and Port Kembla: AIS CPA alarms on
  • Whales June to November: lookout, not electronics

The NSW fleet and the autopilots it runs

Ex-charter Beneteaus, Jeanneaus and Bavarias dominate the 35–45 foot marina fleet and most arrive with a basic wheel pilot or none. The upgrade path is a below-deck Raymarine EV-200 or a B&G NAC with a Jefa drive. Pittwater and Sydney club racing fleets are full of tiller boats on ST2000+ and EV-100 Tiller packs, and the growing two-handed offshore fleet runs B&G NAC-3 systems. The Hunter and South Coast trailer-boat fleets fit Garmin Reactor 40 Hydraulic, Furuno NavPilot 300 and Simrad AP44 packs to plate-alloy sportsfishers.

Local hazards for a boat under autopilot
  • Coastal shipping lanes off Sydney, Newcastle and Port Kembla
  • Swansea, Tweed and South Coast river bars
  • Fishing fleets without AIS off every port
  • Whales June to November
  • Harbour ferries and charter traffic
  • Southerly busters with little warning

Autopilot instruction in NSW

NSW has the deepest pool of instructors in the country. Australian Sailing and RYA affiliated schools operate on Sydney Harbour, Pittwater, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens and teach autopilot use within keelboat and Day Skipper practical courses; most will run a private session on your own boat if asked. Marine electronics installers in the Sydney, Pittwater, Newcastle and Port Stephens marina precincts offer paid handover sessions after commissioning, which is the fastest way to learn your own system. The offshore and two-handed racing community runs clinics that teach pilot-driven manoeuvres at a level cruisers rarely reach.

Ask any provider whether they teach on your boat, in a seaway, and whether tethers, alarms and a failure drill are part of the session. Indicative costs: $300–600 for an installer handover, $90–150 an hour for a private instructor, $1,800–2,600 for a five-day Day Skipper practical.

Questions

New South Wales: frequently asked

Do I need a licence to use an autopilot in NSW?

There is no autopilot licence. The boat driving licence applies to powered vessels at 10 knots or more, and Rule 5 applies to everyone. The autopilot changes nothing about either.

Which autopilot suits an ex-charter yacht on Pittwater?

Under 7 tonnes and coastal, a Raymarine EV-100 Wheel. For the winter run to Queensland, a below-deck EV-200 or B&G NAC with a Jefa drive.

Where can I get autopilot training in Sydney?

Sailing schools on the Harbour and Pittwater, the installer who fitted your system, and the two-handed racing clinics. Ask for a session on your own boat in a seaway.

Is it safe to sail Sydney to Port Stephens overnight on autopilot?

With a watch kept, alarms set, tethers on and the pilot in No Drift or Track, it is a routine passage. With everyone asleep it is not, and the shipping off Newcastle makes that non-negotiable.

Run the finder for your boat, then read the training section before you rely on the pilot for a passage. The lookout is yours in every state.
