AI illustrations and manufacturer product imagery

The helm, coastal sailing and workshop images are AI-generated illustrations created for this guide. They do not depict a specific product, an actual installation, a documented voyage or an identifiable destination. Manufacturer specifications and the boat’s own installation documents take precedence over illustrative details. Product photographs are credited to their manufacturer beside the image. Brand logos identify the equipment discussed and do not imply sponsorship or dealer affiliation.

Specifications

Drive ratings, displacement limits, voltages, network compatibility and mode lists are taken from manufacturer product pages, data sheets and installation manuals for Raymarine, Garmin, B&G, Simrad, Furuno, Lowrance, Hydrovane, Windpilot, Pelagic, CPT and NKE, and from Jefa for drives. Model briefs and new comparisons include specific source links. Where a manufacturer publishes a range or has changed a figure between generations, the site says so and tells the reader to confirm for their exact model.

Prices

Existing catalogue ranges are indicative budgeting estimates in AUD, not live dealer offers or a verified current price survey. They do not establish stock availability. Imported equipment requires confirmation of freight, GST and exchange-rate costs. Obtain itemised Australian quotes for the exact package and installation. Where a model brief reports an observed manufacturer price, it states the source, date and component scope.

Rules

The lookout duty is cited from Rule 5 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea as applied in Australia through the Navigation Act 2012 and state and territory marine safety legislation. Licensing thresholds come from each state authority’s published guidance. Commercial vessel material references AMSA and the National Standard for Commercial Vessels. Racing material references Australian Sailing’s Special Regulations and defers to the current edition and event documents.

Australian conditions

Local wind, tide, sea state and hazard descriptions draw on Bureau of Meteorology climatology and tide data, state boating guides, published bar-crossing guidance from marine rescue services, and published regional boating information. They are general characterisations, not forecasts.

Ratings and verdicts

Six ratings out of five (sailing, power, offshore, value, ease and Australian support) are the editor’s judgement of each product for its intended use, informed by the published equipment descriptions. Supporting test logs or an independently verified owner dataset are not provided. They are not laboratory tests and they are revised at each review.

Review cycle

How and when the site is reviewed

Full review
At least twice a year, before the southern and northern cruising seasons
Price refresh
After the major boat shows and on exchange-rate moves
Rules
When an authority publishes a change; readers are told to check the current edition regardless
Corrections
On receipt, with a source; the contact page goes to the editor

Standards we hold to

  • Every price labelled indicative and dated
  • Every rule summarised, never stated as the law
  • No invented statistics, incident reports or quotes
  • No named businesses as recommendations
  • No affiliate links or paid placement

Where we could be wrong

  • A model discontinued or renamed since the review
  • A displacement rating revised by the manufacturer
  • A price moved by exchange rate or bundle
  • A rule changed since the review
  • A local condition described from typical rather than current data
