Product comparison

Simrad TP22 vs Simrad TP32

Simrad TP22 vs TP32: how to compare two tillerpilots by the actual boat, drive requirement, existing fittings and complete replacement cost.

Option 1
Simrad TP22
Option 2
Simrad TP32

The TP22 and TP32 belong to the same tillerpilot family, making it tempting to choose entirely on price or model number. The useful comparison starts with the yacht’s loaded condition and the drive requirement. Shared styling and a familiar control layout do not make the two units mechanically equivalent.

Which should you choose?

Use TP22 when it satisfies the documented requirement; investigate TP32 when its specification is needed for the assessed boat. Buying the higher-numbered unit without checking geometry and load is not a complete sizing decision.

Choose if

Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?

Choose Simrad TP22 if…

  • The supplier confirms TP22 is suitable for the loaded yacht and planned use.

Choose Simrad TP32 if…

  • The assessed requirement supports choosing TP32 and the complete installation is confirmed.

Send the same boat brief to each supplier

Include the loaded displacement information available, tiller geometry, steering condition and intended trips. Identify uncertain measurements rather than filling them with guesses. Ask the supplier to state which specification determines the selection. This makes two quotes comparable and exposes a recommendation based only on boat length.

Plan the changeover before purchasing

Ask whether the existing electrical feed, connector, mounting socket and tiller pin can remain with the selected unit. Keep written confirmation with the boat’s documents. If you intend to alternate two pilots, have the installer assess both configurations, including stowage and cable protection; a shared family name is insufficient evidence of interchangeability.

Questions

Simrad TP22 vs Simrad TP32: frequently asked questions

Is TP32 always the better value?

No. Value depends on suitability, installation and support. Extra capability that does not address a requirement may not justify the complete cost.

Do the shared connections guarantee every instrument feature?

No. Check the source device, protocol and supported function, not just the connection family.

Can I carry TP22 as a spare for a TP32 installation?

Only if the TP22 itself suits the boat and its deployment is confirmed. A spare should not be assumed suitable because it belongs to the same product family.

Autopilot training after installation

The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
