Product comparison

Raymarine ST2000+ vs Simrad TP32

Compare Raymarine ST2000+ and Simrad TP32 tiller pilots by vessel suitability, retained instruments, mounting work and the decision to change drive type.

Option 2
Simrad TP32

Owners considering a TP32 instead of an ST2000+ often want more steering capability without installing a below-deck system. That is a reason to investigate the exact drive limits, not to assume a different cockpit unit solves heavy helm or an unsuitable installation. Establish why the present pilot is being replaced before choosing its successor.

Which should you choose?

Choose between these units only after both pass the boat assessment. If the problem is unsuitable loading, mounting or steering condition, investigate that cause before treating TP32 as a simple ST2000+ upgrade.

Choose if

Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?

Choose Raymarine ST2000+ if…

  • The ST2000+ remains appropriate for the boat’s coastal use and supported installation.

Choose Simrad TP32 if…

  • The supplier confirms TP32 suitability and explains the benefit for the actual steering requirement.

Distinguish a worn unit from a sizing problem

Describe when the old pilot struggles: the conditions, sail configuration, steering behaviour and any alarms. Ask an installer to separate equipment condition from the boat’s steering and balance. An anecdote that a different model worked on another yacht does not establish that the drive or mounting is suitable here.

Compare the cost of staying above deck

Request quotes for a complete ST2000+ replacement and a complete TP32 installation. If neither matches the assessed requirement, obtain a third proposal for a suitable alternative arrangement. Include access, removal and crew operation in that assessment. The cheapest useful quote is one that actually addresses the reason for changing systems.

Questions

Raymarine ST2000+ vs Simrad TP32: frequently asked questions

Is TP32 a direct upgrade from ST2000+?

It is a different product with its own fitting and connection requirements. Confirm the installation rather than assuming a direct swap.

Will changing pilots remove weather helm?

A replacement pilot does not correct sail balance or mechanical steering problems. Investigate those issues separately.

Should I keep the old pilot as a spare?

Only after assessing its condition and how it would be deployed. A faulty or incompatible spare is not a demonstrated fallback.

Autopilot training after installation

The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
