Autopilot owner handover questions

Ask your installer to demonstrate the autopilot controls on your own boat. Record takeover, alarms, mode limits and unresolved questions at the handover.

An autopilot owner handover should leave the crew able to operate the installed system and find the information needed later. Agree the instruction scope before work begins. Commissioning establishes how the installation performs; owner instruction explains how the crew uses it. One should not be assumed to include the other.

Make the handover a line item in the installation scope. Request time for both commissioning and owner instruction, because checking that the installation works is different from teaching the crew to operate it. Ask for the final settings, source selection, wiring information and any untested modes in writing. If weather prevents a complete trial, agree who will return and what remains to be checked. A second regular crew member should attend where possible. That gives the boat two people who understand the system and reduces reliance on one owner’s memory.

Takeaway

Agree demonstrations, records and follow-up responsibilities before accepting the handover.

Ask for demonstrations on the installed boat

Have the instructor explain the active mode, steering target and supported manual-takeover procedure at each control station. Include remotes only if they are actually part of the installation. Agree which alarms can be demonstrated through a supported test and how the crew should respond.

Ask each regular watchkeeper to repeat the procedure with supervision. A demonstration watched from the companionway does not establish that someone can operate the controls at the helm. Do not use surprise disengagement or deliberate supply faults as a shortcut to a failure drill.

Collect the records needed after the installer leaves

Request an equipment list, relevant manuals, final settings, source selection and a record of the sea trial. Ask how to obtain support when a problem could involve both the steering hardware and the electronics. Keep the supplier’s contact details with the installation documents.

List anything not demonstrated, why it remains open and the agreed next step. If weather prevented a particular check, a signed invoice does not make that check complete. Confirm whether follow-up instruction or commissioning is included in the agreed scope.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a handover take?

There is no universal duration. Agree enough time for the installed controls, intended modes and regular crew, with provision for checks that conditions prevent.

Should the installer switch the system off without warning?

No. Agree a supervised exercise in advance, preserve control and lookout, and follow the supported equipment procedures.
