Reactor 40 SmartDrive applications and compatibility
SmartDrive is a new sailing-focused addition to the Reactor 40 family, announced by Garmin on 1 September 2026. It combines a brushless linear actuator with integrated drive electronics and rudder feedback, rather than treating the drive as an unspecified addition to a generic corepack.
For an Australian owner, the useful question is how the complete installation compares with a conventional below-deck package. Start with the loaded boat, steering geometry, service access and the equipment already aboard. A recent launch is a reason to investigate an option, not evidence that it is the right fit for every yacht.

- Intended application
- Sailboats and catamarans
- Published size envelope
- Up to 45 ft; maximum displacement 33,000 lb (about 15 tonnes)
- Architecture
- Brushless linear actuator with integrated ECU and rudder feedback
- Package distinction
- Standalone actuator and Reactor 40 Sail bundles; display inclusion varies
SmartDrive bundle contents and retained equipment
Ask the dealer to name the part number and identify the drive, course computer, heading sensor, display and cabling in the quote. A picture of the complete system does not mean every option is included in every box. Compare the fully installed scope with the alternative, including the owner handover.
If retaining equipment, list its model and software version. Have the installer confirm the supported combination in writing. Same-brand equipment can still come from different generations, and a network connection does not establish every control feature.
SmartDrive displacement, mounting and service access
Treat the published displacement as a limit to investigate, not a target to work towards. Establish loaded displacement and the drive mounting requirements. The installer needs to inspect how loads enter the structure and verify clearance throughout steering travel.
A retrofit also needs a plan for inspection and eventual removal. An installation that is compact on paper may be difficult to service behind tanks or joinery. Ask to see the proposed access route before committing to structural work.
SmartDrive commissioning and Australian support
Request a record of settings, supported modes and the conditions in which the trial was completed. Include a demonstration of manual takeover for each regular watchkeeper. Keep tasks that were not demonstrated on the follow-up list rather than assuming they are covered by the launch specification.
For a newly released product, ask about Australian service arrangements, spare-part supply and who handles a fault involving both installation and equipment. These are purchasing questions to resolve with the supplying dealer, not conclusions that can be drawn from an overseas launch announcement.

Reactor 40 SmartDrive frequently asked questions
Is this a Reactor 50?
No. Garmin names the sailing bundle Reactor 40 Sail Corepack with SmartDrive. SmartDrive describes the new actuator architecture.
Does the maximum length alone establish suitability?
No. The displacement limit, steering geometry, structural mounting and installation requirements must also be satisfied.
Can I retain my existing drive?
The SmartDrive package is centred on its own actuator. If retaining a different drive, compare the appropriate Reactor 40 retrofit option and confirm compatibility.
Has this site sea-trialled SmartDrive?
No. This is a manufacturer-source overview with editorial installation considerations, not a hands-on performance test.
