Garmin SmartDrive vs Reactor 40 Retrofit Options
Compare a new Garmin SmartDrive actuator with retaining a compatible drive in a Reactor 40 retrofit. Review condition, integration and installed scope.
- Option 1
- New SmartDrive installation
- Option 2
- Reactor 40 with retained drive

This is a replacement-versus-retention decision within the Garmin ecosystem. SmartDrive is the actuator architecture in a new Reactor 40 Sail package; Reactor 40 also covers other steering applications and corepack combinations. They are not successive names for the same box.
A retained drive can reduce structural work, but only if its condition, load rating and electrical compatibility are established. Request a written inspection of the drive, mount, linkage and manual steering before treating reuse as a saving.

Garmin SmartDrive vs Reactor 40 Retrofit Options: specifications and installation
| Criterion | New SmartDrive installation | Reactor 40 with retained drive |
|---|---|---|
| Drive condition | New actuator with new installation requirements | Existing drive needs condition and serviceability assessment |
| Mounting scope | Verify SmartDrive dimensions, travel and structural loads | Inspect existing mount and full travel; reuse is not automatic approval |
| Electronics | Integrated actuator electronics and rudder feedback | Check required computer, feedback sensor, clutch and drive interface |
| Quote comparison | New drive, integration, structure and commissioning | Retained items, replacement electronics, repairs and commissioning |
| Main risk | Assuming a new actuator fits the old mounting | Keeping a worn or unsupported drive to reduce the initial quote |

Which should you choose?
Choose if
Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?
Choose New SmartDrive installation if…
- The existing actuator is worn, undersized or unsupported
- A new mount and complete system can be properly specified
Choose Reactor 40 with retained drive if…
- The existing drive passes inspection and remains serviceable
- Garmin and the installer confirm the exact supported combination
Audit the existing Reactor 40 installation first
List the existing pilot components, actuator, controls and software versions. Include photographs of labels and connections, and distinguish confirmed details from assumptions. Ask a Garmin-qualified supplier which parts of that exact configuration can be retained in each proposed upgrade.
Do not treat the shared Reactor 40 name as a promise that all components interchange. Obtain the required replacement parts and compatibility conditions in writing, including any feedback, power or control changes. This prevents an apparently small upgrade from becoming an unplanned system replacement.
Compare keeping a serviceable drive with replacing it
A retrofit proposal should explain the condition and suitability of the retained actuator. A replacement proposal should explain the installation work and benefit expected from changing it. Neither a new product nor a lower parts bill establishes the better outcome without that assessment.
Compare total cost, service access and responsibility for the combined system. Ask who supports retained equipment if a problem appears after the upgrade, and retain the final settings and commissioning record. These ownership details can matter more than a difference in the headline package price.
Questions
Garmin SmartDrive vs Reactor 40 Retrofit Options: frequently asked questions
Can any old linear drive be connected to Reactor 40?
No. Confirm voltage, current, clutch, rudder feedback and the compatible corepack against the manufacturer’s documentation.
Will a retrofit always cost less?
No. Repairs, access problems or unsupported interfaces can remove the saving. Compare written scopes with the same commissioning and handover.

Autopilot training after installation
The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
