This comparison is for a wheel-steered sailing yacht being assessed for a below-deck . It compares Garmin’s September 2026 SmartDrive launch with the established Raymarine EV-200 Sail package. Neither a newer launch date nor a familiar brand establishes that the actuator fits your steering.

Ask both suppliers to quote the loaded boat and the complete installation. The decision includes the structural mounting, steering travel, retained instruments, controls and commissioning. We have not sea-trialled these systems side by side, so this is a specification and purchasing comparison.

Which should you choose?

Shortlist SmartDrive when the new actuator fits the boat and its complete Garmin installation is supported locally. Shortlist EV-200 Sail when the Type 1 drive fits the loaded yacht and the Raymarine integration is appropriate. A boat outside either drive’s limits needs a different comparison.

Choose if

Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?

Choose Garmin Reactor 40 SmartDrive if…

  • The SmartDrive mount and travel can be engineered for your steering
  • The supplier confirms the supported Garmin equipment and local service

Choose Raymarine EV-200 Sail if…

  • The yacht is within the exact Type 1 drive limits
  • The quote includes the required drive, sensors and compatible Raymarine controls

Request complete parts lists for both proposals

Compare the exact SmartDrive configuration with the specific EV-200 pack and drive proposed for the boat. An EV-200 listing may include a drive or omit it; the product code and contents matter. Ask both suppliers to identify required controls, sensors, feedback and installation accessories.

Have the installer survey the existing steering, power supply and mounting arrangement before deciding that one package will be simpler. Marketing descriptions of a system do not settle compatibility with retained hardware or the amount of installation labour.

Separate a new product launch from local availability

For an Australian SmartDrive purchase, obtain a dated confirmation of supply, support and the exact configuration available. A manufacturer announcement is not evidence that a particular local dealer has stock or a completed installation of that package.

For the EV-200 alternative, request the same information and compare equivalent installation and handover scopes. Use the published specifications to form questions; comparative performance on your boat requires a suitable trial and should not be inferred from this editorial comparison.

Questions

Garmin SmartDrive vs Raymarine EV-200 Sail: frequently asked questions

Is SmartDrive automatically better because it is newer?

No. The launch adds an actuator option, not evidence of superiority on your boat. Fit, steering load, integration and commissioning decide suitability.

Can I compare the advertised pack prices directly?

Only after matching inclusions. A computer-only or drive-excluded package cannot be compared with a complete actuator installation.

Autopilot training after installation

The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
