CPT wheel pilot vs Raymarine EV-100 Wheel

CPT vs Raymarine EV-100 Wheel: compare standalone compass steering with an Evolution wheel-drive system, including cockpit fit and instrument requirements.

Raymarine EV-100 wheel autopilot pack components
Product image: Raymarine. Illustrated pack; inclusions vary by part number.

Both options drive the yacht through the wheel, but they offer different approaches to control. CPT is a standalone magnetic-heading pilot. EV-100 Wheel is part of Raymarine’s Evolution system. Decide whether independent heading steering or supported instrument integration is the reason you are buying before comparing the installations.

Which should you choose?

Shortlist CPT for suitable wheel installations where standalone heading steering is the intended job. Shortlist EV-100 Wheel when its drive limits fit and Evolution integration matters. Neither choice establishes an offshore capability simply by being wheel driven.

Choose if

Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?

Choose CPT wheel pilot if…

  • You want standalone compass-heading control and the CPT mounting assessment supports your wheel arrangement.

Choose Raymarine EV-100 Wheel if…

  • You want supported Evolution functions and the EV-100 Wheel drive suits the loaded yacht.

Check the complete wheel installation

Photograph the wheel, pedestal, spokes, obstructions and normal helm position. Ask each supplier to explain the attachment and release arrangement. Review how the crew moves past the installation and how it will be inspected. Treat belt access and service clearance as part of the design, not a problem to solve after delivery.

Decide which functions you would miss

List the modes you actually use. An owner content with compass-heading steering has a different requirement from someone who wants supported wind or route functions. Price the appropriate complete system for that requirement. For an Australian purchase, confirm freight, warranty handling and access to replacement parts with the seller rather than assuming overseas support is local.

Questions

CPT wheel pilot vs Raymarine EV-100 Wheel: frequently asked questions

Does CPT follow chartplotter routes?

CPT is a standalone compass-course system. Do not buy it expecting chartplotter route following.

Does a standalone pilot replace the watchkeeper?

No. The crew still monitors position, traffic, weather and steering behaviour.

Is EV-100 Wheel the same as EV-100 Tiller?

No. They use different drive arrangements; obtain the exact Wheel package and its installation requirements.

Autopilot training after installation

The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
