Simrad NAC-D vs NAC-2 and NAC-3: Steering Interfaces

Compare Simrad NAC-D digital steering with NAC-2 and NAC-3 drive control. Check steering compatibility, sensor bundles and installation requirements.

The first decision is digital steering versus a separately driven steering actuator. NAC-D is intended for supported electronic steering systems. NAC-2 and NAC-3 installations control appropriately selected conventional drives or pumps. A display or shared network does not make those architectures interchangeable.

Identify the exact steering controller, engine generation and software before requesting equipment. This avoids buying a core pack that communicates with the chartplotter but cannot operate the vessel’s steering.

Which should you choose?

Choose the architecture the vessel supports. NAC-D is not a higher-power upgrade for a conventional NAC-2 pump installation; NAC-3 is not a substitute for a required digital steering interface.

Choose if

Which autopilot configuration suits your boat?

Choose NAC-D Performance if…

  • The boat has an explicitly supported digital steering arrangement
  • The supplier confirms the complete control and sensor configuration

Choose NAC-2 or NAC-3 system if…

  • The boat requires a conventional drive or hydraulic pump
  • The selected computer is rated for the actual drive load

Confirm the steering interface before selecting a computer

Start with the steering-system make, model and interface supported by the vessel. Ask the supplier to identify the exact NAC-D configuration and confirm compatibility against current manufacturer documentation. A digital steering installation should not be inferred simply because the boat has modern displays.

For a NAC-2 or NAC-3 proposal, specify the drive and its requirements as part of the selection. These are not interchangeable price tiers that can be chosen independently of the steering hardware. A written system diagram makes differences between proposals much easier to assess.

Include the full control and commissioning scope

List the controls, heading source, feedback and network components included in each quote, together with anything retained. Ask who coordinates the steering supplier and electronics installer if compatibility or setup questions cross their responsibilities.

At handover, have the operator demonstrate the supported modes and manual takeover for the installed system. Keep the configuration and software record with the vessel documents. Choose on confirmed integration and support, rather than assuming NAC-D is a universal upgrade for any boat using NAC-2 or NAC-3.

Questions

Simrad NAC-D vs NAC-2 and NAC-3: frequently asked questions

Does NMEA 2000 compatibility prove steering compatibility?

No. A data connection does not prove that the computer can command a particular steering system.

Is NAC-D Performance a completely new NAC-D computer?

This page describes the current HS65 bundle. It does not claim the underlying NAC-D computer was launched in 2026.

Autopilot training after installation

The best pack badly understood is a worse autopilot than a modest one used well. A half-day handover covers modes, override, alarms and a failure drill.
