Autopilots for wheel-steered yachts

Compare autopilots for wheel-steered yachts: wheel pilots and below-deck drives, loaded displacement, instrument compatibility and Australian fitted budgets.

Beneteau Oceanis 35–46, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349–440, Bavaria Cruiser 37–46

This is the biggest single group of yachts in Australia: the 34–46 foot production cruisers that fill marinas from Pittwater to Manly to Fremantle, most of them ex-charter or owner-cruised, most with a pedestal wheel and cable steering. They are also the boats most often fitted with the wrong autopilot, because a wheel pilot is cheap and the dealer had one on the shelf.

The decision is above deck or below deck. Under about 7 tonnes and coastal, an EV-100 Wheel is fine. Anything heavier, anything that sails overnight, and anything heading up the Queensland coast for the winter deserves a below-deck on a , from Raymarine, B&G or Garmin with a Jefa drive.

Why the linear drive wins on a cruising yacht

A below-deck pushes the rudder directly from a on the rudder stock. It is quiet, dry, several times more powerful than a wheel drive, and it disengages with a clutch so the wheel is instantly free. It also removes the belt and motor from the cockpit, which matters on a boat where people live in the cockpit for a season.

Almost every production cruiser has a already fitted or a quadrant with a bolt-on arm available, and most have room in a lazarette or under an aft berth for the drive. The installation is a yard job of one to three days, and the result is an autopilot the crew stops noticing.

Sizing by displacement, not length

Manufacturers rate drives by loaded displacement. A Beneteau 40 at 8 tonnes light is 10 tonnes with tanks, gear, a dinghy and a season's provisions. Size to the loaded figure and give yourself margin. Raymarine's Type 1 is rated to 11 tonnes; above that it is a Type 2 with the ACU-400. Jefa drives for B&G and Garmin are sized from the maker's tables by displacement and rudder torque.

  • Under 7 t, coastal: EV-100 Wheel or CPT
  • 7–11 t: Raymarine EV-200 Sail, B&G NAC-2/NAC-3 with a Jefa drive, Garmin mechanical pack
  • 11 t and up: Raymarine EV-400, B&G NAC-3 with a larger Jefa drive
  • Hydraulic wheel steering: a hydraulic pump pack from any brand

Brand fit on a production cruiser

Most Australian production cruisers came with Raymarine instruments, which makes the EV-200 the path of least resistance: same network, same dealer, complete pack with the drive. Owners who value wind steering above everything else, or who race, move to B&G. Garmin makes sense if the plotter and radar are already Garmin.

Whatever the brand, budget for a , a proper or backbone, and a handover session with the installer. The handover is where you learn what the wind vane mode actually does on your boat, and it is the part most owners skip.

The Australian cruising calendar and your autopilot

The classic east coast season is north in May, south in October. That is weeks of downwind trade-wind sailing in 20–25 knots with a following sea, exactly the conditions that separate a wheel pilot from a . Then it is reef passages inside the Great Barrier Reef with strong tidal streams, where route following and or track modes earn their keep. A below-deck system with wind and track modes, tuned on the way north, makes the season.

Lookout

A pilot that steers for days tempts crews to stop looking. Inside the Reef, in the Whitsunday Passage and along the NSW shipping lanes, the lookout rule is not optional. Set AIS and off-course alarms and keep a watch.

Systems that suit wheel-steered cruising yachts

RaymarineRaymarine Evolution EV-200 (Sail and Power) →

The complete below-deck pack most Australian yacht dealers install and service; ideal for 7–11 tonne cruisers.

B&GB&G NAC-3 Autopilot (Triton2 Pilot Controller) →

The best wind steering available; pair with a Jefa drive on a 36 ft+ cruiser.

RaymarineRaymarine Evolution EV-100 (Tiller, Wheel and Power) →

The Wheel pack is the sensible coastal choice under 7 tonnes.

RaymarineRaymarine Evolution EV-400 →

For heavy cruisers over 11 tonnes.

Avoid
  • A wheel pilot on a 10-tonne boat heading offshore
  • Sizing to light displacement
  • Skipping the rudder reference on a Type 1 drive

Questions

Frequently asked

Can I fit a below-deck drive myself?

Competent owners do, but the drive foundation, rudder stops and reference geometry are structural and safety-critical. Most Australian owners have a yard do the mechanical work and an electronics installer do the network.

Does my ex-charter boat already have an autopilot?

Many charter yachts were delivered without one or with a basic wheel pilot. Check what is fitted and its age; a ten-year-old wheel pilot is usually worth replacing with a below-deck system at refit.

Autopilot commissioning and boat-specific training

Every boat type above ends with the same advice: a handover on the water, a settings card, alarms set and a failure drill. The training section explains what good instruction looks like and where to find it.
